ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS:

First Nations Programs offers language and culture to all elementary school students through our staff and the Role Model Program.  The district employs First Nations Support Workers, Home School Coordinators, Language and Cultural Workers to ensure all students receive the benefits of Aboriginal culture, language and assistance with academics and various student and family needs.

Our Language and Cultural Staff, Harold Nelson in the Port Hardy area and Ernest Alfred in Alert Bay offer programs in schools that includes all students participating in learning about the local First Nations culture and language.  Their programs are very popular and successful.

Course Descriptions:

Introductory Kwak’wala (IKWAK 11)

No prerequisite: Open to grades 9 – 12

This course is designed as a provincially prescribed course for students who may not have taken Kwak’wala in earlier grades. This course is available to all students and successful completion of the course will provide students with a level of competence to allow them to participate successfully in Kwak’wala 11 and Kwak’wala 12. Students can take Kwak’wala at other grade levels as appropriate.

Kwak’wala 10 (MKWAK 10) , Kwak’wala 11 (MKWAK 11) Prerequisite: MKWAK 10 , Kwak’wala 12 (MKWAK 12) Prerequisite: MKWAK 11

 

Shared Understandings of the Kwak’wala Speaking Peoples                                        Locally Developed Course

This is a four credit course that has been developed to provide greater opportunities, relevance and meaning for all students living in our local areas. Students will explore themes specific to the cultural teachings, values, traditions and language of the Kwakwaka’wakw peoples who make up the First Nations groups encompassing the traditional territory of which SD85 is a part.

 

First Nations Studies 12 (FNS 12)

Provincially examinable   Prerequisite: SS 10

FNS 12 covers a wide range of topics affecting both the First Nations and the surrounding communities including cultural traditions, resource management, current issues, government, and education. Students gain a global as well as a local perspective on First Nations in a changing world. First Nations students are encouraged to take this course to add depth to their cultural identity. Non-First Nations students are encouraged to take the course to help them understand First Nations cultures and to deepen their understanding of their own culture.

 

English First Peoples 10 (EFP 10)

Provincially examinable   Prerequisite: EN 9

English 10 First Peoples is the equivalent of English 10. The curriculum base for this course focuses on aural, written, visual, and performance texts that share the experiences, values, beliefs, and lived realities of First Peoples. Texts include oral story, speech, poetry, dramatic work, dance, song, film, and written prose fiction and non-fiction. The course is designed to support students in developing the English oral, written, and presentation language, literacy, and thinking skills they must have to graduate.

 

English 11 First Peoples (EFP 11)

Prerequisite: EN 10 or EFP 10

English 11 First Peoples is the equivalent of English 11. The curriculum focuses on texts – aural, written, and presentation – that share the experiences, values, beliefs, and lived realities of First Peoples. Texts include oral story, speech, poetry, dramatic work, dance, song, film, and written prose fiction and non-fiction. The course is designed to support students in developing the oral, written, and presentation language, literacy, and thinking skills they must have to graduate.

 

English 12 First Peoples (EFP 12)

Has a provincial exam  Prerequisite: EN 11 or EFP 11
